Overview

As you go about your daily business there is no doubt you will see people out and about with their dogs, or perhaps you have friends or family members with dogs in their homes.  Have you ever wondered why some of these dogs behave mannerly while others seem difficult or impossible to control?  The answer is partly due to the dog’s genetic predisposition, but mostly it is a result of basic obedience training from a young age.

I think we all would agree that an ill-mannered pet can add more stress to an already stressful life, but a well-behaved dog is a pleasure to be around.  This course is designed to give you the knowledge and skills so that your dog may become the well-mannered pet that you have always wanted.  By mastering the skills taught in this course you will be on your way to having a happy, calm, pleasurable dog that everyone wants to be around. You will be able to go for leisurely walks, have guests over without worrying that they will be annoyed by your dog, and have a calm and peaceful household.

Basic obedience is only the beginning, but it lays a solid foundation for any other goal you may have for your dog.  You could progress to more advanced obedience, dog sports, competitions, therapy work, search and rescue, etc… There’s no limit to the possibilities you could achieve!

What you will learn:

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for anyone who wants to build a better relationship with their dog through effective communication.  It is intended for new dog owners or those who have  little or no prior dog training experience. It is also a great refresher course if you want to brush up on your skills.

Learning Path

Dog training is the process of teaching a dog a particular set of skills or behaviors that will enable him/her to successfully co-exist with humans and to perform tasks that are helpful to us in our “human” environment.

Basic obedience training is the process of developing a method of communicating with a dog with the goal of establishing a certain level of control over the animal.  The dog is taught to respond to a specific set of requests or “cues”.  The training begins with a few basic cues and may then progress to more advanced, specialized training.

Basic obedience training includes

  • Focus Training – teaching the dog to give and maintain eye contact
  • Recall training – teaching the dog to come on command
  • Sitting training – teaching the dog to sit on command
  • Walking or heeling training – teaching the dog to walk on or off lead with the handler
  • Staying training – teaching the dog not to stray on command
  • Sociability training – teaching the dog not to be aggressive to humans, other dogs or other animals

Before a behavior can be assigned a cue, we must first have a reliable way to get the dog to perform the behavior.  This is essential to the process because without having a behavior to “associate” the cue to, the cue itself would be useless.  We need a way to “show” the dog what we want it to do.  There are 3 common ways to “Get” behavior. They are:

  1.  Luring – Using something to attract or entice the dog to move into a particular position or tp perform a certain behavior.  Common lures in dog training include food, a toy, your voice or body movement, etc…
  2.  Shaping – Rewarding incremental steps toward the final behavior.
  3. Capturing – Catching the behavior in the act.  .
